Well, you could if you know how to fit them right. When we created ATTENU8, we talked to many ear plug users. Majority who used foam ear plugs not only found them wasteful to regularly throw them away, they struggled to attain the right fit which affected sound reduction. Foam ear plugs may be cheaper but its one size fits all approach makes it harder to attain the right fit which is important in reducing more noise. The case for an aluminium body With the aluminium body, it is easier to fit ATTENU8 properly into the ear canal, offering better sound reduction. Other than an easier fit, an aluminium body helps in the following ways: 1. Density: By using a denser material like aluminium, it increases mass per unit area which then increases transmission loss. That being said, ATTENU8 is still lightweight and comfortable. 2. Structure & rigidity between materials: By combining aluminium with a polyurethane (PU) foam tip, it increases sound attenuation as PU is a good sound absorber. With this combination, sound energy is loss through different materials with varying densities. 3. Barrier against stubborn lower frequencies: Low-frequency sound waves are harder to absorb as it has longer wavelengths that reach greater distances; passing through without much vibration. Because of the mass and density of aluminium, the aluminium body is able to de-couple lower frequency sound waves before reaching the ear, offering more attenuation. Efficacy ATTENU8 ear plugs have a rating of SNR32. To derive this rating, a test was conducted in an acoustic test chamber with specialised equipment. It's also manufactured to follow CE certification BS EN352-2:2002 standards.
